I've pretty successfully stayed away from politics since I started this blog. I've kept with lighter side stuff. And I had intended to do that with this post. But... but... OMG! I doubt very much if there's anything I can say here that hasn't been said already, but, well... let's see, in just a little over a week, we've had a presidential candidate nearly killed by an assassin's bullet. It's absolutely astounding how close Donald Trump came to meeting his maker on July 13th. If he hadn't turned his head at just the right moment... well, you know.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised at all the hatred and vitriol coming from the left. People who say it's a shame Thomas Crooks missed. Gee, I wonder of all the comparisons with Hitler have anything to do with that. If you really, genuinely think Trump is the new Hitler, you really don't know much about history. But it was inevitable. If people really believe that, then “by any means necessary” takes on meaning.
Now understand: I would have rather seen someone else as the Republican nominee. Ron DeSantis for example. I think he'd be a strong, effective president. Of course, the “Trump is Hitler” trope would have just been transferred to him. I mean, look, Bush was literally Hitler. Then, I think Mitt Romney was Hitler for awhile, Dick Cheney was Hitler, and now, Trump is just the latest Hitler. And I will happily vote for him. If I remember correctly, Ronald Reagan was Hitler for awhile.
Kimberly Cheatle, the Director of the US Secret Service until this morning, underwent a brutal but well-deserved bi-partisan grilling in Congress yesterday. She refused to resign, even though it was a pretty much unanimous opinion that she should. Now, she has.
We are not living in a sane or serious time. It’s frightening, particularly considering the dangerous times in which we live. You know what will happen if Trump is elected in November. Violence on a massive scale. That’s pretty much a given. It'll make Madonna's musing about “blowing up the White House” look positively mild.
So we were still reeling from the assassination attempt, when a week later, Biden decides, under pressure from his own party, not to run for re-election. Haven’t heard a word from “Dr.” Jill on all this. And so Democrats come out of the woodwork, praising him as a kind, decent, honest man who loves his country, and one of the best presidents in American history. It's all bunkum. Biden is a vile, mean-spirited, dishonest, corrupt, not very bright man. He always has been. Add to that senile, and you have the opposite of a best president. James Buchanan and Jimmy Carter have finally been displaced as the worst presidents in history.
And as of this writing, Joe Biden hasn't been seen in public for about a week. They say he'll address the nation Wednesday night. But this public disappearance has prompted another bunch of conspiracy theories: Is he still alive? Are they keeping him under wraps? Is he still suffering from COVID? And there's more.
My feeling is that he is angry and embarrassed about having been forced out of the race. My feeling, one shared by many, is that if he's not capable of running a presidential campaign, he's not capable of being president.
And now, we have the vapid Kamala Harris as the heir-apparent of the Democratic nomination. My favorite talk show host, Erick Erickson put it best:
"(Kamala) Harris isn’t just weird. She’s annoying. Her defenses will be that all criticisms are sexism and racism, but the actual reality is Harris comes across as dad’s new girlfriend trying hard to be cool to the teenagers. It’s awkward every time."
Yes, the first person to pull out of the primaries in 2020 because of abysmal polling now stands a fairly good chance of becoming POTUS in January. I do believe Trump will beat her, but, well, ya never know.
I realize I haven't added anything new to the conversation, but as a blogger, I had to say something. I think it’s the law or something. I'm tired of living in unprecedented times. I want to go back to living in precedented times. In charted waters. Next time, I’ll return to frivolity. I sincerely hope.
Strange times indeed.
As you probably know I strongly disagree with most of what you say here. Decrying hate from the left without acknowledging all the hate from the right. Denigrating politicians that are not on "your side". Supporting a politician who tries to make himself God's savior by holding up and selling bibles. You used to rail against "virtue signaling". Et al......
